Dimitris Makrygiannakis

The Lars Tunbjörk Award 2024

The jury's statement:
Dimitris Makrygiannakis is a street photographer who goes beyond the frame. In his compositions, he finds surrealist angles, often humorous, in ordinary everyday situations. He has an astute eye and a singular style entirely of his own.

Dimitris Makrygiannakis (b. 1979) works as senior physician in Rheumatology at Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm. In 2010, and after a series of events, he discovered artistic photography. He fell totally in love, and photography has since then been a major part of his life. Starting off as a street photographer, he now takes photos of anything he considers to have an artistic quality.

Makrygiannakis is the first Tunbjörk Award recipient with a background in a field other than professional photography.

In the current exhibition, Makrygiannakis shares glimpses from the world that fascinates him, and delves deeper into the potential of photography by creating diptychs. He seeks to show not only the events per se, but to highlight additional meanings, prompting the viewer to reflection.

Makrygiannakis is a member of the international photographers’ collective “Burn My Eye”, and was awarded the first prize in 2013 in “Invisible Photographer Asia”, one of Asia’s largest competitions for street photography. He has participated in several exhibitions all over the world, including the Head On Photo Festival, Australia, the Miami Street Photography Festival, USA, and the Thessaloniki Photo Festival, Greece. He has lectured at festivals and held workshops on street photography, and is currently self-publishing his first book, “Rodina”.

The prize was established by the Tore G Wärenstam Foundation in Borås and is awarded in collaboration with the Lars Tunbjörk Foundation to a photographer who works in the spirit of Lars Tunbjörk.
